Introduction and Course Objectives



This (8) hour Retail Investigation course is designed to cover specific areas of retail which may be unfamiliar to you or your Investigators. This course is also intended to assist you or your Investigators with recertification or renewal of your investigative license as required by the Louisiana State Board of Private Investigators.

This curriculum was developed by several members of the Loss Prevention community with over 69 years of combined experience. Your instructor for this course is Timothy E Burke. Mr. Burke has been in retail Loss Prevention and Risk Control for over 21 years and has worked in several capacities. He has worked on special teams designed to detect and prosecute shoplifting rings, a Loss Prevention Manager, a District Loss Prevention Investigator, and District Loss Prevention Manager. Mr. Burke has developed an expertise in the following areas of retail and risk control, Preventing Profit Loss, Analyzing Physical Security, Camera Installations, Court Testimony, Operative Investigations, Employee Theft Investigations and Resolutions, Surveillance and Report Writing. The objective of this course is to introduce you to retail investigations, operative investigations, and assist companies with increasing profit margin, in addition to understanding of a very complex industry.

To test your knowledge of retail, shrink, investigations, report writing, etc, this course will include a pre-test, as well as a post test for your learning. We know that most, if not all of you may not score high on the pre test; however, it is our belief that each of you will score 100% on the post test. The idea is to learn about retail investigations so that your clients may be serviced better, it is not our intent to embarrass anyone.

In 2003, the retail industry as a whole experienced over 35 billion dollars in losses due to employee theft, and is on record pace for 2004. Most employers do not realize theft is occurring until it's too late. To assist you with completing successful operations, we will be discussing several topics. Which are:

  • Shrink how it impacts retail
  • P.I.E.
  • What Is an Operative?
  • Setting the stage, and Key objectives
  • Common types of operatives investigations
  • Theft Investigations, Employees and Vendors
  • Employee theft interviews and room set up
  • Statement Taking
  • Report writing, and
  • Becoming a vendor


  • At the end of this course, you or your investigators should have basic knowledge of retail which should assist with successful investigations and resolutions for your present and future clients.
